Naples AC World Series

Italy is preparing to host the next America’s Cup 2012 World Series, to be held in April and May respectively in Naples and Venice. Naples will host the America’s Cup World Series, an event that will bring the best sailors in the world to Italy in April 2012 and May 2013.
From April 7 to 15, in Naples on the magnificent promenade of Via Caracciolo and for sure the scenery will fascinate the visitors: from the exceptional panoramic view of the race saw by Posillipo’s promontory, to the “race village” sets up not far from the heart of Naples: Castel dell ‘Ovo, San Carlo theater, Castel Sant’ Elmo, the Villa Comunale in Naples, Piazza of Plebiscite, Royal Palace and the San Vincenzo wharf. There have been controversies about the costs and the alleged “rape” of the waterfront, with the construction of barriers to facilitate and protect boats from heavy seas. The mayor of Naples replies to the controversy by highlighting the opportunities of the event: “The America’s Cup is a chance that Naples has been waiting for boost its international image, which will be an opportunity for everyone to enjoy the beauties of the sea, beach and landscape, that, together the whole city, will be the protagonist of this important sporting event. ”

The opening ceremony of Naples AC World Series will be held Sunday, April 8 at 21. The event will be characterized by the presence of all team members and with a spectacular light show. This year there will be a new format because each “fleet race” will be longer than the past year, lasting 35 minutes;  besides the final result of the “Fleet Raing Championship” will be determined by each performance had during every fleet race, while previously everything was resolved at the single fleet race held on last Sunday.
Each valid race will become important for the final result for any team, if it wants to come to the last decisive Sunday race with a better score.

 America's Cup World Series - Fleet Race

The Naples America’s Cup World Series will follow these dates:
April 11 – up to three fleet races qualifying for match racing event
April 12 – up to three fleet races qualifying for match racing event
April 13 – AC500 (speed tests) and three fleet races qualifying for match racing event
April 14 – qualifications and execution of Match Race event
April 15 – the spectacular speed tests, known as AC500, then follows the announcement of the winner of the Naples Fleet Race Championship.

The race will be broadcast by RAI, Mediaset, SKY TV on Canal 430 and by the America’s Cup YouTube channel
In Naples will compete nine teams from eight nations. Among the players there is the Italian Luna Rossa skipper Max Sirena with two boats, Aleph (FRA, skipper to be confirmed), Artemis Racing (SWE, skipper Terry Hutchinson), China Team (CHN, the skipper will be confirmed on March 30), Emirates Team New Zealand (NZL, skipper Dean Barker), Energy Team (FRA, skipper and helmsman Yann Guichard Loïck Peyron), Racing Green Comm (ESP, skipper Vasilij Zbogar), ORACLE Racing (USA, skipper Darren Bundock and Jimmy Spithill) and Team Korea (KOR, skipper Nathan Outteridge). New Zealand Emirates Team, skipper Dean Barker’s team, that is now leading the overall ranking of the America’s Cup 2011-2012 World Series with a point ahead of ORACLE Racing Spithill.
