The Italian funnyman actor Roberto Benigni is working in the new Woody Allen Rome-based project, titled “To Rome With Love” (previously entitled Bop Decameron and then Nero Fiddled).
He is best known outside Italy for an exuberant appearance at the 1998 Oscars, where his tragicomedy “Life Is Beautiful” picked up three Oscars. In the past he had starred in “Il piccolo diavolo!”(The little devil”, with Walter Matthau), “Johnny Stecchino” (Johnny Toothpick), and in “Il mostro” (The Monster).
Very famous and loved in Italy, the comedian after the Honorary Doctorate in Letters from the University of Bologna, on 2007 was awarded with the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa by the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, and the sequent year with the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa by University of Malta.
Benigni is an improvisatory poet, lately appreciated for his explanation and recitations of Dante’s Divina Comedy by memory, as he is a deep estimator and expert. On the other hand, he is originally from Tuscany, just the land of the famous writer.
Now, Benigni is set to make a belated return to the big screen after being cast in this new movie, written and directed by Woody Allen, getting a second chance with American audiences.
TO ROME WITH LOVE is a name selected as an homage to the eternal city of Rome where the film was shot on location last summer and still in progress.
The movie stellar cast includes Allen himself, Alec Baldwin, Roberto Benigni, Penelope Cruz, Judy Davis, Jesse Eisenberg, Alison Pill, Greta Gerwig and Ellen Page.
The film is a story that follows various people life — some American, some Italian, some residents, some visitors — and the romances and adventures and predicaments they get into.
The film will be in Italian theatres on next April 20, with the title “A Roma con amore” and released in the USA on June 22, 2012.
