Emad Burnat, director of “5 Broken Cameras“, the first Palestinian documentary getting an Oscar nominee, was stuck at Los Angeles International airport along with his family. Why?!
For the U.S. officers Customs seemed impossible that the Academy could even nominate a Palestinian.
A case of madness mixed with racism in a country probably still terrified by terrorism, and to the point to prevent a possible Oscar winner go through customs. Unless they all were anti-Palestinians!
To ‘save’ the poor Burnat the intervention of Michael Moore, the friend and famous documentary-maker who via Twitter talked about this incredible story. Thanks to Moore, who immediately contacted the Academy, the director, his wife and 8 year old son were finally ‘liberated’ by the agents, but only for a week.
In fact, after the Oscars, winner or not, Emad Burnat must go away.

“5 Broken Cameras“, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, is a deep personal and first-hand review of the non-violent resistance implementation in Bil’in, West Bank village threatened by the encroachment of Israeli settlements. Born as a farmer, Emad Burnat used his first video camera in 2005 to film his child birth, then moved to directing with this shocking documentary, which he edited together the co-Israeli filmmaker Guy Davidi.
