Reading a few articles around, I noticed that some psychologist or educator is concerned about the “new” sexual orientation of some today’s youth.
Beyond the tendencies poles apart (heterosexuality and homosexuality,) in the middle there are others that are often defined by the term Pansexuality. Omnisexuality or pansexuality is sexual attraction, sexual desire, romantic love, or emotional attraction toward people of any sex or gender identity. Young people who self-identify as pansexual assert that gender and sex are insignificant or irrelevant in determining whether they will be sexually attracted to others.
For many, this “post-gay” trend is related to the use-abuse of stimulants and antidepressants, a sexual utopia that would hide the discomfort of the “Cuddle Puddle’s proponents.” Insecure teens or heavily marked by the failure of other relationships…. maybe!
For some “pundits” of these days the search for identity begins among school’s desks, where our teenagers, between a class and another, engage in sexual relations with peers – and this would seem fine to them – and according to their opinion, the trouble would start when teenagers do not make any difference in dealing with male or female. What? Why?
Perhaps in some cases it is a challenge in themselves, but as always we cannot be so generalist.
Honestly, I cannot understand why, like many other things, sexuality has to be identified, labelled, categorized, and criticized unless it complies with what society presumes must be its “appropriate” course.
Who of us established or decides what is the correct sexuality for human beings?
Unluckily, whatever is human is uncertain and not absolute, including some rules. For certain complicated things, like sexuality, who are we to judge and criticize?
Like other mental affairs, sexuality is a very complicated issue that can’t be governed, beyond not being in some cases a choice.
Pansexuality rejects the gender binary, the “notion of two genders and indeed of specific sexual orientations”, as pansexual people are open to relationships with people who do not identify as strictly men or women. We can assume that it is an evolution of bisexuality prevalent among young people in the late 60’s and that until recently was considered cutting-edge and quite common among aristocrats.
Camille Paglia promoted bisexuality as an ideal. Harvard Shakespeare professor Marjorie Garber made an academic case for bisexuality with her 1995 book “Vice Versa: Bisexuality and the Eroticism of Everyday Life,” arguing that most people would be bisexual if not for repression and other factors such as lack of sexual opportunity. In “Scientific American Mind”, scientist Emily V. Driscoll stated that homosexual and bisexual behavior is quite common in several species and that it fosters bonding: “The more homosexuality, the more peaceful the species”. The article also stated: “Unlike most humans, however, individual animals generally cannot be classified as gay or straight: an animal that engages in a same-sex flirtation or partnership does not necessarily shun heterosexual encounters. Rather, many species seem to have ingrained homosexual tendencies that are a regular part of their society. That is, there are probably no strictly gay critters, just bisexual ones. Animals don’t do sexual identity. They just do sex: a normal thing.
Well, apart from this scientific considerations or studies, shouldn’t the equal rights and freedom involve our sexual tendencies too?!
While the recovery of the ship “Concordia” is still ongoing, with the wreck straightened, thanks to a recovery project ever realized before, the company “Costa” is meanwhile publicizing its new cruise ship. The cost of recovery exceeds 600 million Euros, and even if compensation insurance will not cover the entire amount, Costa’s leaders will continue with the recovery and to restore the environmental damage caused in that stretch of coast.
Probably the new ship will replace the model Concordia, despite this new one will be largest ship of Costa’s fleet. It has been called “Diadema“, 132500 tons, with 1852 cabins that can accommodate more than 3724 passengers. The ship has been launched in November in the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera, and the flagship will be delivered in October , 2014, after completing the work for the construction of the interior. Then the ship will depart from Venice towards Savona, the harbor where it will enter service for the season 2014/2015, with the first winter cruises.
But for 2014 new innovative models of other shipping companies also are coming.
Notable among these are:
The Quantum of the Seas, Royal Caribbean. 4180 passenger cabins with LCD screens projecting the view of the ocean, a skydiving simulator, bumper cars and a revolving observation tower for views from the top. The Quantum of the Seas cruise will depart from the port of Bayonne (New Jersey) to the Caribbean and the Bahamas, and the cruise will last between 7 and 12 nights.
The Norwegian Gateway, Norwegian Cruise Line. 4028 passengers, a hull designed by the eccentric pop artist David Le Batard in Miami. 27 courses available for each dinner, a water park, two shows and theatrical performances by the winners and nominees of the Grammy Awards. The route will be forever linked in Miami, and will lead to some Caribbean islands, for 7 nights traveling.
The Regal Princess, Princess Cruises. 3560 passengers, the sister of Royal Princess, which was inaugurated by Kate Middleton in June. On the ship the ‘Seawalk’ will be the greatest particularity: a walk on a transparent platform suspended over the sea; a television studio, all outside cabins with balconies and a special culinary offerings . Cruises from May to October will touch Venice and Athens, 12 days and during the winter the ship will move in the Caribbean for 7 nights traveling.
Molecule miR-335: a valuable aid against tumor development
Continuing discoveries of 2010, Dr. Roberta Benetti with colleagues at the University of Udine, found that some molecules block the proliferation of the tumor. These cells only attack diseased cells and have therefore targeted as a possible cure. In addition, since these molecules are produced directly by the body, are completely natural and do not have side effects. This discovery could be a key in the treatment of cancer, becoming a viable alternative to chemotherapy or radiation therapy, that have many serious side effects.
The study was published in the renowned journal Cancer Research of the American Association for Cancer Research. A statement of the University of Udine says:
‘In particular, this research has for the first time demonstrated that one of microRNA molecules, precisely the miR-335, is directly responsible for the control, the generation and functions dell’onco-suppressor Rb, gene involved in the protection of the development of tumors. In addition, the study shows that the expression of miR-335 affects directly in balancing the delicate balance of protection against tumor development, because it also strikes on the tumor suppressor p53 through an indirect influence, the effects of two basic proteins known to be deregulated in tumorigenesis.”
The research was conducted with the support of the Italian Association for Cancer Research (AIRC), and with the collaboration of Michael Scarola (PhD student), Stefan Schoeftner (an expert researcher Austrian) and Claudio Schneider, Professor of Biology at the University of Udine and director of the National Laboratory of the Interuniversity Consortium for Biotechnology (CIB).
In a message, Dr. Benetti states: “In terms of therapeutic applicability, the study on miR-335 is still far from clinical trials and none of us has ever dared to say that could replace chemotherapy. The steps to evaluate its effects are very long and we are now experimenting on mice. Of course, we followed up the discoveries of 2010, also deepening its role in stem cells and publishing a recent paper in which we find associated with this new miRNA a new pathway which seems especially active in tumors of germinal origin. We really hope to continue in the right direction but we absolutely are not to the point to be able to do promises.”
That said, we are glad that it’s an Italian research and hoped that these clinical trials really give the results that we are all waiting for years, against this disease to which we are powerless and that for centuries continues to claim millions of victims.
After the apprehension for the Hantavirus, the viral infection of animal origin broke out in Yosemite Park in California, of which there is no vaccine and that can lead to death, another alarm now comes from England.
The alarm was set up following the death of a man and the hospitalization of another coming back from Qatar. At first it was thought that the infection was due to SARS, as the symptoms of the disease left suppose, instead scientists have then identified a new virus that already had caused some deaths in Congo in the past, whose infection is transmitted by ticks found on domestic and wild African and Asian animals. What frightens most virologists is that the symptoms of this new virus, unlike SARS, may not become visible before the spread of infection, and this could lead to a severe pandemic which there is no cure or vaccine.
For those who think that an Asian virus could hardly reach their distant country, change your mind please…. with the goods that travel everyday and reaches all the ports of the world, or people who move around the globe, the transmission of a virus is very easy nowadays. Oh, poor us!
